Amboseli National Park is one of only 2 premium National Parks in Kenya. Only 3 hours from Nairobi and the airport (JKIA), it's definitely a worth while visit. Home to an elephant reserve, baboon research centre and a truly wide array of wildlife in large numbers.
Drought and Death
Since 2019 the drought Kenya has suffered, had serious consequences for the wildlife of the park. Elephants alone died in the hundred (about 200). Efforts were made to supply straw to wildlife populations, but the deaths of wildebeest, buffalo, zebra and antelopes were unavoidable. Even so, Amboseli National Park remained rich in wild life, thanks to the ever present marsh, fed by underground rivers. A reliable source of water for all the wild life, even during in the dry seasons.
Even in March 2023, before the rains, you could see plenty of various animals in Amboseli National Park. Photo courtesy of Babara Scholtz.
New Life
The following month, April, and the weather was drastically different. The rains fell gradually at first and the consistently. Slowly the grass grew back giving the animals an opportunity to slowly fatten up once more. The highlight of it all was seeing a precious little elephant calf following mommy closely as she grazed on the fresh grass.
